Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
General Eligibility Requirements For Sassa Grants
Before diving into specific grants, it's important to note some general requirements that apply across most Sassa grants.
Grant applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. Applicants must also reside within the borders of South Africa.
Most grants are subject to a means test, which assesses the applicant's income and assets.This means test could determine whether you receive a grant or not, or how much your Sassa grant payment will be worth.
Grant applicants generally cannot be receiving care in a state-funded institution. Applicants cannot receive multiple social grants for themselves simultaneously.
Sassa Older Person’s Grant Required
To qualify for the Older Person’s Grant, an applicant must be 60 years of age or older and a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa.
They must not be receiving another social grant for themselves and must comply with the means test. Additionally, they cannot be maintained or cared for in a State Institution.
Child Support Grant
Eligibility for the Child Support Grant requires the primary caregiver to be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa, along with the child(ren).
The applicant must be the primary caregiver of the child(ren), who must be under 18 years of age.
The applicant and their spouse must meet the means test requirements. An applicant can not apply for more than six non-biological children. Furthermore, the child cannot be cared for in a state institution.
Foster Child Grant
To receive the Foster Child Grant, the foster parent must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee residing in South Africa with the child.
The child must have been legally placed in the care of the foster parent(s) and remain in their care for the duration of the grant.
Disability Grant
Applicants for the Disability Grant must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees between 18 and 59 years of age, residing in South Africa. They must submit a medical assessment report, no older than three months at the time of application, confirming the impact of their disability.
The applicant and their spouse must meet the means test requirements, and the applicant must not be maintained or cared for in a State Institution or receiving another social grant for themselves.
Care Dependency Grant
Eligibility for the Care Dependency Grant requires the applicant and the child to be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees residing in South Africa. The child must be under 18 years of age and have a permanent, severe disability confirmed by a medical assessment report.
The applicant and their spouse must meet the means test requirements, except for foster parents. The care-dependent child(ren) must not be permanently cared for in a State Institution. Foster parents income is not taken into account.
Grant-in-Aid
To qualify for the Grant-in-Aid, an applicant must already be receiving an Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant, or War Veteran’s Grant and require regular assistance with daily living activities due to physical or mental disabilities.
They must not be cared for in an institution that receives a subsidy from the State. It is important to remember that the grant-in-aid cannot stand alone and will lapse if the primary grant lapses.
