The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) wants to ensure all accommodation landlords are paid and prevent students from being evicted. This comes after reports that the financial aid scheme missed payments which caused concern among students who fear they will be evicted.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to eligible students enrolled in approved programmes at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in South Africa.
The funding provided by NSFAS includes money for tuition and registration fees. NSFAS also provides allowances for living expenses such as food and stationery as well as money for accommodation for students who require it.
NSFAS Administrator Freeman Nomvalo acknowledged receiving complaints about unpaid accommodation allowance payments and the impact it has had on some students.
These complaints prompted NSFAS to set up a dedicated email address to process all disputes or concerns related to unpaid accommodation allowances. The dedicated email address is [email protected]
The deadline for submissions for accommodation providers to submit complaints was initially 10 May 2024 but was later extended to 31 May 2024.
NSFAS said all inquiries received by this deadline will be processed and paid by the end of May. Any outstanding invoices after May will be processed in June.

Plans To Improve Student Accommodation
Nomvalo revealed that NSFAS is taking a proactive approach to prevent future accommodation issues.
A national conference on future student accommodation is planned for September 2024. This conference will involve various stakeholders, including private and public accommodation providers, to discuss and develop solutions for regularising private student accommodation.
We intend to host the conference in September 2024 involving various stakeholders across the country including private and public accommodation providers.
They further revealed that a Task Team involving all the student accommodation stakeholders has been established to serve as a consultative forum to address all issues relating to student accommodation.
This Task Team is expected to report back in the September conference.
The goal of the conference is to ensure greater certainty for investments, student safety, and standardised private accommodation options.
We do so to regularise private student accommodation to give greater certainty for future investments, the safety of students and standardisation of private accommodation.
