The Minister of Higher Education released a statement on the public holiday to remind everyone that access to education is not just a privilege, but also 'a fundamental right that facilitates personal and national growth'.
The statement went on to convey apologies for once again not delivering its commitments on time. Student allowances that were supposed to be paid to TVET students on Friday the 25th April were not made.
"Due to a system glitch related to the size of the batch files, these payments were processed on Saturday, April 26th and have been reflected in all student accounts as of April 27th".
They did go some way to promising not to do it again.
"NSFAS is actively collaborating with its financial services institution to resolve this issue to prevent any recurrence in the upcoming months".
Ironically the previous statement from NSFAS, which was released on Friday, decried as fake news a report circulating on some websites and social media that student allowances would not be paid on Friday. Although this report was purely speculative and published to gain attention from students, it turned out to be somewhat accurate.
TVET Student Allowances
TVET students already receive less than students at universities.
Other problems have occurred this year where the amounts to cover rent were paid to students instead of directly to the landlord.
The statement released by the Minister made reference to other issues that the student funding body is struggling with. There are still outstanding amounts owing from last year's funding. This is due to both students and accommodation providers.
There are also still appeals that were made this year that have not been resolved by the organisation.
