Minister Blade Nzimade ploughs billions into university infrastructure and is working on investments for TVET colleges. He also makes it clear that though infrastructure is his main focus he also intends on focusing on other things that will benefit universities and TVET colleges.

Minster of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande invests R11 billion in varsity into varsity infrastructure from  2020/21 to 2022/23.

Of 26 universities across South Africa, all will benefit from the Ministers investment.

Nzimande says, that he intends on working with the private sector to boost investments for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector infrastructure.

I have restructured and streamlined infrastructure management within my department and I appointed a Ministerial Advisory Team (MACI) on Post School Education and Training (PSET) infrastructure, as well as established, working together with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), an Infrastructure Project Management Office, with a particular focus on student accommodation.

Imbali Education and Innovation Precinct

Explains Nzimande.

While visiting the Imbali Education and Innovation Precinct, the Higher Education Minister said that in March this year, a further R496 million was invested in student housing and other types of university infrastructure in historically disadvantaged institutions.

Nzimande also made sure to emphasis that the Department will not only be focusing on infrastructure but but also on lecturer training, scarce skills and curriculum development for TVET colleges 

He says:

The establishment of new TVET lecturer qualifications and the development of associated programmes, and their offering by universities is also well underway

He announced that he is in the middle on implementing a Staffing South Africa’s Universities Framework (SSAUF). This will ensure the continuous development of personnel at university level and support universities to recruit, develop and retain academic staff.

Finally he explains, "All five sub-programmes of the Staffing South Africa’s Universities Framework are now being implemented, including the Nurturing Emerging Scholars Programme, the New Generation of Academics Programme, the University Staff Doctoral Programme, the Future Professors Programme and the Higher Education Leadership and Management Programme"
