The Gauteng Education Department opened online school admissions on 15 June 2023, and after weeks of accepting applications, the deadline for submissions is set for Friday, 21 July 2023.

Although the total number of processed applications is yet to be confirmed, the department processed over 400 000 applications during the first week of application being opened.

Online Registration For Grade 1 at Gauteng Schools

In a bid to streamline the application process and ensure transparency, the Gauteng Education Department has opted for online admissions for Grades 1 to 8. This move has allowed for more efficient management of applications and has been lauded for its user-friendly interface.

Parents and guardians are urged to adhere to the deadline and complete the application process before the cut-off time to secure their child's spot in a preferred school.

Since the department has already granted an extention, failure to submit the application by the specified date may result in potential delays in the admission process or even the loss of a placement opportunity. To apply, parents need to follow a step-by-step guide that is outlined below

How To Apply For GDE School Registration

Step One: Parent/Guardian Registration

  • Visit the Gauteng Education Department’s official website
  • Complete a personal details form and create a unique username and password.
  • Enter the ID number, followed by the validation of consonants in the name and surname as per the ID document.
  • Fill in all compulsory fields marked with a red asterisk.
  • Accept the terms and conditions to proceed to the next step.

Step Two: Address Details

  • Provide the current home address and select it from the drop-down list.
  • If the correct address is not found, parents can use the advanced search option to locate their address on the map.
  • Complete the parents' work address (if applicable).
  • Click "submit" after verifying the selected address.

Step Three: Learner Registration

  • Complete all compulsory fields marked with a red asterisk.
  • Select the language of learning and teaching for Grade 1 applicants from the 11 official languages.
  • For Grade 8 applicants, specify whether the learner's current school is in Gauteng and provide the name of the current school.
  • Click the "apply to schools" button after completing the form.

Step Four: Apply to Schools

  • Complete the online school application form.
  • Schools are selected based on various criteria, including home address within the school feeder zone, sibling or previous school, work address within the feeder zone, and more.
  • Parents can apply to a maximum of five schools for each learner.
  • After submission, a confirmation page will display the application reference number.

Step Five: Upload Documents

  • Parents must upload all required documents using the upload function on the system.
  • If unable to upload documents, certified copies must be hand-delivered to all applied schools within seven days of the application.
  • The document status will only be visible after verification by the school.
  • Throughout the application process, parents will receive confirmation via SMS to ensure security and verification. Therefore, it is essential to provide a reliable cell phone number.
  • For those without internet access, assistance can be sought at the nearest district office or walk-in centre.

The Gauteng Education Department stresses that the application process must be completed in one sitting, and each step of the application process will be confirmed through SMS for security and verification processes, and it is therefore important that parents provide a reliable cell phone number.

When will school placement offers be made?

Parents and guardians who applied will start receiving placement offers Monday, 4 September 2023, through SMS. Placement offers will be issued until all applicant learners are placed.
