What Is The N+Rule?
The N+ rule defines the maximum period for which you can receive financial aid. The 'N' represents the standard duration required to complete your qualification, while the '+' allows for additional time to accommodate unexpected challenges that might delay your studies.
Most students fall under the N+1 rule, meaning they receive funding for the standard programme duration plus one extra year. Students with disabilities are eligible for the N+2 rule, which provides an additional year of funding.
How the N+ rule applies to Unisa students in 2025
For university students in South Africa, the N+ rule considers your total registration history at any public university, not just the period funded by NSFAS.
According to the NSFAS Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for Financial Aid, the N+ rule applies to Unisa students as follows:
- For distance university students at non-contact institutions, the "N" period of study is double the minimum time required to complete the qualification.
- NSFAS adds one additional year ("+") to account for unforeseen circumstances, reflecting the challenges of self-paced, remote learning.
