The release of the 2023 matric exam results is now available. Thousands of learners will participate in the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams including learners who were rewriting their matric exams.

Learners who received their 2023 matric rewrite results now have two sets of matric results. It's important to note that these learners have the option to apply for these marks to be combined.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) does not automatically combine matric results unless you write a supplementary examination. If learners want to have their marks combined they are required to submit a matric mark combination.

Applications for combining matric marks can be submitted at a District Education Office, at the Provincial Education Department or at the DBE.

You've just received your rewrite results and now you have more than one statement of results, fret not. You can visit your nearest district office, the Provincial Education Department or the National Department to apply for the combination of your results.

Learners will be required to apply for a replacement certificate for a change of status.

If you wrote matric in more than one examination sitting and you want to combine your credits to qualify for a National Certificate, i.e. Senior Certificate (SC) or National Senior Certificate (NSC), you must apply for a Replacement certificate: change of status.

When Matric Results Are Combined

The department explained that in order for results to be "combined," certain conditions must be met.

If, after applying for your marks to be combined and your matric pass/credits still lead to the same outcome (either admission to a Higher Certificate or admission to a Diploma), your results won't be merged into a single certificate.

There are qualifying criteria for having your results “combined”. If, when checked against the criteria, the credits still result in the same status (i.e. Admission to a Higher Certificate or Admission to a Diploma) the results will not be combined into one certificate.

It's important to note that combining results doesn't involve adding the two scores together; instead, the higher of the two marks will be considered.

"Combination does not mean your two results will be added together, the higher of the 2 marks will be used."
