The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has recently confirmed that the second batch of NSFAS allowances has been paid to its university and TVET College students.

According to a recent statement by the bursary scheme, more than R600 000 000 was paid out to nearly 360 000 university students on 31 July 2023, while over 98 000 TVET College students received over R380 000 000 in student allowances on 25 July 2023.

NSFAS has paid a total of R608,601,256 to 357,693 beneficiaries at public universities on 31 July 2023 while a total while a total of R383,671,046 was paid to 98 710 beneficiaries at Technical Vocational Education and Training college on 25 July 2023.

The allowance payments, which have been made through the scheme’s direct payment system, are intended to cover student expenses such as meals, learning materials and transport costs.

When The Next Allowance Payments Will Be Made

NSFAS has also confirmed that additional allowance payments will be made to tertiary institutions that have submitted registration data after the 23rd cut off date.

Progress Of 2023 NSFAS Applications

All NSFAS student funding applications for the 2023 academic year have all been processed. The scheme has dispatched officials from its partnering service providers to speed up the process of onboarding students, providing bank cards and addressing all related queries.

NSFAS Responds To Inaccurate Payment Accusations

The scheme also continues to defend its current payment system against accusations that incorrect allowance payments were paid to undeserving students.

It is with regret that the scheme's efforts in ensuring that a fully-functional student-centred model is realised are hijacked by thugs who previously benefited from systems which exposed to students to criminality and fraudulent activities.

NSFAS further stated that, if necessary, legal action will be taken against who made the accusations. They will continue paying allowances using the new direct payment system.
