Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane said that 310 994 Grade 1 applications and 413 208 Grade 8 applications were received, bringing the total applications received to 724 202.

Parents then were given the deadline of 28 July to upload documents with the department now in the process of verifying those documents. Should there be any issues with documents, the department will contact the parent to resolve any issues.

Mabona, said:

The process went quite well this time around and we are quite happy, as a department, that most of the parents, they've uploaded their documents ... that is encouraging because now it is for our officials to check on the applications and make sure that we prepare for the placement period.

When will placement offers be made?

Parents and guardians who applied will start receiving placement offers Monday, 4 September 2023, through SMS. Placement offers will be issued until all applicant learners are placed.

We will be placing up until everyone is at a school.

When an offer is made, you have 7 days to accept or decline the offer.

Every year, thousands of school learners are left without a placement as the new school year commences. Looking at the high number of applications received, Mabona has said that outstanding school placements shouldn't be a major issue as it usually is.

If learners were not placed in their school of choice, they will then be placed at neighbouring schools.
