Feenix believes that education is very important, however, not all students have the luxury of attending or even finishing tertiary education institutions because they did not have access to funding to cover their tuition fees.
To help students cover their tuition fees, the government introduced the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). However, only those who meet the basic requirements are eligible for the bursary.
“If we hope to realise impactful change, all sectors of society will need to contribute towards the solution. Public Higher Education Institutions have, inter alia, established advancement or development offices to engage with various stakeholders and partners in mobilising resources to assist students in funding their studies,” stated Feenix.
The Advancement and Alumni Relations Office (AARO) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) partnered with FEENIX, a crowdfunding platform where university students can fundraise for their outstanding tuition fees. Over the past five years, 131 DUT students have received financial assistance of R5 280 808.96.
This partnership has effectively brought donors and beneficiaries together in a manner that ensures that the funds are channelled accordingly to assist where the need is greatest.
“As the AARO at DUT, we are truly grateful for the platform that FEENIX creates in bridging the gap between funders and beneficiaries and we are humbled by the opportunity to participate in this partnership geared towards improving the lives and livelihoods of our students, their families and ultimately, their communities,” said AARO.
On 8 July 2022, Feenic distributed R4,63 million which help 163 students cover their tuition fees. 58 males and 105 female students benefited from the funds. In total 2 955 students were assisted since the initiative began in 2017.
