The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) is now accepting applications for the 2025 school year. If your child is approaching school age, here's everything you need to know.
Applications close at the end of June 2024. Parents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure their children are admitted in schools in the province.
Admission Age
- Grade R: Children must be four years old turning five by 30 June 2024.
- Grade 1: Children must be five years old turning six by 30 June 2024.
The ECDoE says while the above are the official admission ages, parents have the option of waiting until their child turns slightly older before enrolling them in Grade R (age 5) or Grade 1 (age 6).
While Grade R is not compulsory, the ECDoE says Early Childhood Education helps prepare children for formal schooling. Through play and interaction with peers, they develop essential learning skills. While attendance is not compulsory, it's highly recommended by the ECDoE that children attend Grade R.
Required Documents (may vary by school)
- Proof of residence (utility bill, lease agreement)
- Immunisation card (Grade R applicants only)
- Last official school report card (if applicable)
- Learner's ID, birth certificate, or passport
- Study permit or application proof (for foreign learners)
- In some cases, a police affidavit may be required
School applications are not limited to schools in your area. You can apply to any public school in the Eastern Cape. It's recommended to contact your preferred schools directly to learn about their specific admissions process and available spaces.
However, schools have designated "feeder zones" to manage student numbers. Students residing within a school's feeder zone receive priority for admission.
Don't worry if you live outside a feeder zone, you can still apply to your preferred school, but securing a spot is not guaranteed.
