The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has disputed a newspaper report claiming the cost to print 2024 Matric Exams came at a cost of R3.6 billion.

An article published in the City Press Newspaper gave the impression the DBE paid R3.6 billion to print matric exam scripts.

The DBE clarified that the cost for printing and packaging of the 2024 Matric exams cost R220 million.

The estimated cost for printing and packing question papers for all candidates writing the October/November examination is R220 million, which is a fraction of the R3.6 billion quoted by City Press.

Why R3.8 Billion Is Being Spent On Matric Exams

The DBE explained that each full-time candidate writing seven subjects costs the government approximately R3,800 to R4,000. There are a total of 727,121 candidates, bringing the total to R2.9 billion. Adding 155,215 part-time candidates who sit for fewer subjects brings the total cost to R3.6 billion.

The budget covers several aspects of exams, including setting and moderating them. The exams must then be printed, transported, and securely stored.

Once exams have been written, the DBE has to pay for the marking process, which includes remuneration for markers, accommodation, and meals. Additionally, funds go toward maintaining the Examination Computer System and distributing results.
