Matriculants are entering into their semi-final exams called prelims. The prelim exams serve as a trial run before the final exam takes place. Many students often feel overwhelmed with emotions when it comes to this time of the year.

Gillian Moodley says, “pupils should also keep in mind that prelims are often pitched at a slightly more difficult level on purpose, to serve as a wake-up call and that the most important steps to take right now are firstly to avoid panic, and secondly, to take back power by putting in place a winning strategy for the weeks to come”.

“It’s very overwhelming at the moment, knowing that it's my final year and my grades need to be excellent so that I can get into a good university. I feel as though everything is being rushed and pushed onto us and we are feeling all the pressure due to Covid. I keep reminding myself that it's my last year and I need to do the best that I can in order to complete my matric year. Covid has made everything tough for me as a person, well I think for all matriculants because we want to achieve good results and pursue our dreams”, says Caitlin Schrickker.

How to study smartly

# Plan ahead:

Creating a study schedule for yourself saves a lot of time. This will indicate how much time you will spend studying on a particular subject and having enough time to revise over your notes. Planning ahead reduces your stress levels and you will be less overwhelmed  when you are well prepared.

# Tutoring:

The purpose of a tutor is to assist students with preparing for tests/ exams or focusing on a particular learning aspect that a student struggles with. With the extra help of a tutor, students will feel more confident in their learning abilities.

# Find an approachable study method:

There are different tools and methods that can be used to study efficiently and effectively. What works for one individual may not necessarily work for another. Find an adaptable method that best suits you and retain information easily.

# Form a study group:

This is one way of learning from others by sharing your knowledge of what you have learnt. Try and keep your study-group small so that it does not become overwhelming. Each student can focus on one particular area and share their thoughts, ideas and viewpoints with each other.

# Have a positive mind-set:

Try to start your study session with a positive affirmation and fill your mind with positive thoughts. Thinking positively reduces stress levels and shifts your focus on thinking about the good in every given situation.

What is the best thing to do before an exam?

  • Use your time sparingly
  • Eat a healthy and well-balanced meal
  • Drink lots of water
  • Remain calm and have a positive mind-set
  • Have a good night's rest
  • Get up early to revise your work
  • Focus on your breathing as this helps to calm the nerves
  • Be on time for your exam

By being well prepared for a test or exam comes with a lot of dedication, commitment and sacrifices.  In the end, what you sow you shall reap.
