Setting goals is just one way to tackle the many challenges that matric can bring. These goals can be both small and big, playing their part in helping you achieve what you want to achieve.

When setting these goals, you should keep in mind a number of factors that can play a major role in the outcome of your goals.

Set small and big goals

Treat the small goals as stepping stones to the bigger goals, instead of only having big goals.

Remember to make sure your goals are realistic and take into account your abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Unrealistic goals can lead to disappointment and demotivation.

Be intentional about what you want to prioritise

Identify the subjects or tasks that need more attention and prioritise them when planning out your goals. This means you could have to give more time and effort to areas where your performance is weaker. .

Create a Timeline

A timeline will help you create a structure of when you want to achieve your goals. Without a timeline, you might not have the sense of urgency required to take action to eventually help you achieve your goals.

Go a step further and keep track of your progress and performance along the way. Doing this will help you stay accountable and make any necessary changes if needed.

Ask for help along the way

Don't hesitate to ask for help and advice from teachers, career guidance counsellors, your friends, or family members. Having a support system can make a big difference in helping you achieve your goals.

Learn from your mistakes and failure

Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities. If you face challenges or fail to achieve a goal, don't give up too soon. Take a look at what went wrong and use that knowledge to improve.

Don’t forget to celebrate yourself whenever you reach a goal. No matter how small or big it is, you deserve to be able to celebrate and motivate yourself to keep working towards what you want to achieve.

Matric is not just about the destination of final exams, but rather the journey of self-discovery and learning new habits that will go a long way in helping you even beyond high school.
