For many students, the first semester was challenging and they may have developed some bad habits along the way. These habits may include becoming disorganized, procrastinating too often, or putting off studying until it's too late. If you have struggled with any of these issues, understand that there is no better time than now to address them before you begins your second semester.

Start the semester by taking stock of what was learned last semester and how you can build upon successes. This is an opportunity to be more in control of your experiences.

Think about the following questions:

  • What did I learn about myself in terms of how I learn best?
  • What worked well for me last semester?
  • What were some challenges I faced and how did I overcome them?
  • What will I do different this semester to be more successful?
  • What might get in my way? How can I overcome these obstacles?

Here are some action steps that you may find useful:

  • Review the syllabus of the upcoming semester’s courses to remind himself of what is expected from you.
  • Gather notes from last semester and organize them for easy reference for exams.
  • Create a plan for the upcoming semester featuring exam dates and assignment due dates.
  • Review your study habits from the previous semester to see if there are any changes or improvements your could make.

Now that the first semester is over, what are you looking forward to this semester?
