Although make-up, grooming, skincare, body treatments and massage still comprise a large part of the treatments, the field has expanded so much that the focus now falls more on result-driven treatments and a holistic approach to the treatment of clients. Hence also the development of the field in Somatology that is studied over three years.
Somatology is a multidisciplinary study of the human body and requires a scientific approach to the skin and body. The end result is no longer just relaxing at the salon, but also doing result- driven treatments that have an impact on the client's well-being and specific condition.
The type of treatments that are carried out in salons and medical aesthetic clinics these days are much more specialized than years ago and also have an effect on the deeper layers of the skin. Along with this, of course, comes a greater risk for complications.
It is therefore very important to make sure the somatologist is qualified and trained to be able to do the treatment. It is also extremely important for a somatologist to have the necessary problem- solving skills to act correctly if a complication arises. Most complications develop due to a lack of adequate training.
In the industry there are different levels of training and it is important to understand how they differ, as each plays a very specific role in the industry.
One-year qualifications and short courses focus much more on practical skills, where a three-year qualification in Somatology focuses on giving the somatologist the necessary theoretical background to be able to offer safe and result-driven treatments. This is especially relevant when we look at more advanced treatments such as chemical peels, micro-needling, laser therapies and more.
A Somatology qualification also offers you various international job opportunities at spas and on international passenger ships, as the South African qualified somatologist is in high demand due to their extensive knowledge and skills.
Students who obtain a Somatology qualification can also further specialize in skin aesthetics with a greater focus on medical aesthetic treatments. Such a therapist will work together with a medical practitioner with a focus on advanced techniques and technology.
Some of the treatments carried out by the Somatologist in a medical aesthetic practice include:
- Laser and Light Therapies for anti-aging and hair removal
- Advanced chemical peels
- Microneedling
- Treating unbalanced skin conditions
- Scientific skin evaluations using advanced technologies
