In a bold move to address one of the biggest challenges facing students today, private higher education institution STADIO has launched its own mobile network, STADIO Connect. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden of mobile data for students and staff, making access to online learning resources more affordable and inclusive.

Addressing the Digital Divide in Education

With the shift towards online and blended learning models, internet access has become a core part of the higher education experience. From submitting assignments online to accessing digital academic resources, staying connected is essential. However, for many students, the high cost of data remains a barrier to success, deepening inequality in education across South Africa.

Introducing STADIO Connect

STADIO Connect is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service, offering some of the lowest mobile data rates in the country. Launched across all STADIO campuses, the network provides students and staff with data-free access to STADIO’s online platforms and tools, helping them stay connected without breaking the bank.

According to STADIO Chief Information Officer, Merwe Roux, the rollout will extend to distance learning students in the second semester of 2025. Later, the service will also be made available to the family and friends of students and staff, further widening the reach of affordable data access.

"Our vision is to empower the nation by widening access to quality higher education, and through STADIO Connect, we aim to eliminate the cost of data as a barrier to quality higher education", says Roux. "A common theme in feedback from the annual student survey is the high cost of data and challenges students face in accessing online learning resources. We believe that in the digital world we live in, education needs to use technology to support and advance our students’ learning experiences and set them up for success in the 21st century, so we set out to find a way to make that technology more accessible."

How STADIO Connect Works

Each student receives a free SIM or eSIM when they register (limited to one per person). The SIM comes preloaded with non-expiry data, airtime, and SMS bundles. Students can activate their SIM through a simple RICA process using WhatsApp or by contacting the helpdesk.

The service is powered by megsApp in partnership with MTN, South Africa’s largest mobile network provider. This ensures users benefit from reliable nationwide coverage and strong network infrastructure.

Users can port their existing numbers or request new ones. They can also buy additional SIM cards if needed. Through the STADIO Connect app, students and staff can purchase additional non-expiry data, voice, and SMS bundles — with access to exclusive offers and specials.

Empowering Students Through Connectivity

By launching STADIO Connect, STADIO is taking a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in higher education. This innovative solution supports students not just academically, but financially — ensuring more learners have the opportunity to succeed in a connected, technology-driven world.
