Worried that you failed a test, exam or even the year? Know this, failing an exam or test is not the end of the world. And guess what, you’re not alone. Failing a test or exam only means that you did not do your best the first time around and next time you'll need to commit yourself more and learn from your mistake. Below we have identified four great tips on how to cope with exam failure.
Here are our four tips on how to cope with exam failure:
-
Don’t Panic!
- When you go into a state of panic, you are only making matters worse and this ultimately doesn't solve anything. Accept that failing an exam is something perfectly normal to happen during your academic life.
-
Talk to people
- There is nothing better than blowing off some steam with a friend, family member, spouse or a stranger. Sometimes even hearing a small encouragement can change your mood and motivate you to do better next time.
-
Access the damage
- One of the biggest mistakes many students make is to think that after failing once, they won’t fail again. This is far from true unless you’ve learnt from your failure. Access what it is that you did wrong, make and review your notes, get the correct answers or a memo from the lecturer and take time to work through the things you got wrong so that you do not make the same mistake twice.
-
Determine the way forward
- Once you have refocused and taken the time to grieve, it’s time to determine the way forward. Be strategic and figure out when you’re going to retake the class or the exam again. Once you’ve mapped out your next steps, ensure that next time you are prepared and ready for any challenge that comes your way.
Exam failure is just one of the many hurdles you’ll have to surpass in your life, and there are always possibilities to learn and rise above failure.
