The “missing middle” refers to those students who come from working-class households that do not qualify for funds from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme while at the same time, they cannot afford higher education.

Each student approved to have their studies funded by ISFAP will receive funding to cover all tuition costs as well as accommodation, travel, books, meals as well as a monthly student allowance.

In order to qualify for ISFAP funding, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Applicants from families whose annual income is between R0 - R600 000.00 per annum.

Many ISFAP-funded students have questioned whether they are required to reapply for funding each year whilst they complete their studies.

In response, Morne Du Toit, ISFAP CEO, explained the following:

“Some of our funding programmes are for one year only (this is dependent on the funder), for example, if a funder approaches us and says they only want to fund students for one year – for example, we want to fund 4th year engineering students, then such funding is only for one year.”

Du Toit noted that some of the other funding offered at ISFAP will be offered for the student's entire course as long as the student continues to meet all the requirements of the bursary.

This means that whether students are funded for the entire course of their studies or only for one year is entirely dependent on the programme or qualification and what the organisation agrees to cover.

The financial aid provider has noted that the differences will always be set out very clearly in the offer and contract between ISFAP and the student. Therefore, students are encouraged to thoroughly read through and understand the funding offer and agreement.

ISFAP provides funding to students from several institutions both university and TVET colleges across the country and the areas of study funded vary for each institution.
