Teaching assistants were introduced in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching assistants are employed under the Department of Education's Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). The purpose is to create employment opportunities for young people between the ages of 18 and 35 to ease the impact that the pandemic placed on employment.
