NSFAS is the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, a funding organisation that aims to assist poor student follow their academic dreams. 

Student who can't afford to fund their own tertiary education rely on NSFAS to help fund them. 

NSFAS funds all 26 South African universities and 50 public TVET colleges. They also fund a wide variety of degrees and courses. 

Do they fund anything law related though? 

Yes they do, NSFAS funds law courses at all the universities that have law faculties. 

However they only fund your undergraduate law degree, if you wish to continue to postgraduate it is advised that you seek a other form of funding. 

NSFAS has a a set of requirement that need to be met in order for you to receive funding. These requirements are: 

  • Only South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualifies for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • Person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

The following is who would not qualify for NSFAS: 

  • Students that have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.
  • Foreign students (any student who is not a South African citizen).

If you are a law student and fit into the NSFAS requirement, you will be able to receive funding for your degree or diploma.
