Last week 20-year-old first year student, Mmathabo Cornelia Sesinyi was found dead in her room. Sesinyi’s death comes nearly two months after second year student Onkgopotse Kgeletsane, 23, passed away at the university’s James Moroko residence in Mahikeng.
The university has expressed that the institution is deeply saddened by the passing and have sent their condolences to the family and friends of Mmathabo.
Following the deaths, students have gone into a state of panic and confusion as they feel that they are no longer safe on campus and at the residences. They feel that their lives are also at risk.
“This is not the first incident to happen, so I am very confused, and I do not know how to feel and what to feel because it seems that we are not safe anymore.” says North West University student.
The university has announced that they have arranged counselling for anyone who was in contact with Mmathabo to ensure that they are dealing with her death and to make it easier for them to handle.
“To lose a student or a staff member is bad for the university as a whole.” says the University Spokesperson.
South African Police Services (SAPS) has cautioned the public from spreading any false and misinformation regarding the death and they urge everyone to allow the police to carry out the investigation.
Police have opened an inquest and investigations are currently underway.
