Students at the University of Zululand (Unizulu) had been in protest, demanding that their university finds strategies to implement and keep them safe.
It has been reported that this protest was violent and the university has ordered that students vacate the KwaDlangezwa campus in Empangeni.
There were also reports of police that had tried to disperse the crowds of students using rubber bullets, who then reacted by allegedly reacted by throwing stones at the police.
One student was said to have been rushed to the hospital after being shot by a private security company at the university.
This protest comes after it had been reported that a University of Zululand student had been shot and killed by robbers at an off-campus residence.
Allegedly, a week ago a female student was raped by an unknown man in one of the off-campus properties.
Unizulu has confirmed that the person murdered by the robbers was not a registered student at the institution.
According to the university’s investigations, it has been revealed that the student who had opened the case of rape has dropped the rape charges.
These two incidents have shaken this student community and students have also called on Student Representatives to help find solutions on their behalf.
In a SABC interview, one of the students explained further:
We do not want to find ourselves protesting without finding an amicable solution.
However, the university has confirmed that learning will continue online in the meantime.
Unizulu has made a call to landlords that have decent properties in the same vicinity as the university to come forward, so that they can help them adhere to their processes, as there aren’t adequate spaces for students in the residences that they are currently occupying.
