Recently, Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that 29 million people in South Africa receive some form of grant. Ramaphosa also revealed that 11 million out of the 29 million people receive the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, also known as the R350 grant.

The remaining grant beneficiaries receive the following social grants from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa):

  • Care dependency grant
  • Child support grant
  • Disability grant
  • Foster child grant
  • Grant-In-Aid
  • Older persons grant
  • War veterans grant

Social grants provided by the government help the most vulnerable people in South Africa. The amount of money received may not be much but these beneficiaries ensure that they use the grants to meet their basic needs.

Those in need of the following grants may visit the Sassa website to find out how they can apply for their preferred grant. Each grant has its own application requirements, therefore, applicants should ensure that they meet the requirements before applying.

Applicants may visit a Sassa office nearest to them to apply for a grant. They are advised to have the necessary documentation with them when they apply.

They may either check the Sassa website or phone a Sassa office to check which documents are needed. .
