The ABET examinations period will run for more than three weeks, kick-starting on 1 June 2022 and ending on 27 June 2022.

Exam candidates are advised to familiarise themselves with the requirements of the exams. In a statement, CET Deputy Director-General, Thembisa Futshane said:

Please follow the examination rules, ensure that you are seated and ready for the exam before the exam start time.

Should exam candidates be in need of psychological support either for anxiety or other (non-academic) matters, they may contact the Higher Health helpline on 0800 36 36 36.

Who qualifies to study ABET?

  • You are older than 21 years of age
  • Valid identity document or birth certificate
  • You must not have had any education past grade 9 level.

It is important to note that, any person with schooling beyond grade 9 does does not qualify for ABET.

An ABET Centre Manager is responsible for the submission of entries of candidates at a date to be determined by the examining body.

Candidates are required to register with an examining body in the province where they reside.

According to the National Education Policy Act: Conduct of Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Level 4 examinations, exam candidates ought to register at least 4 to 6 months prior to the assessments to allow for registration details to be captured, corrected before receiving feedback.

Here’s a list of other terms used for ABET:

AET: Adult Education and Training. This term is a term that is often used interchangeably with that of ABET, mostly used overseas.

FET: Further Education and Training. Often used in the context of vocational training.

TVET: Technical and Vocational Education and Training. This name took over from that of FET.

CET: Continuing Education and Training. This refers mainly to higher education training.

ABET education does not offer basic and numeracy skills to its targeted audience, but it also provides lifelong learning and at the end of the journey, provides individuals with nationally recognised certificates, that open up new doors of opportunities.
