Students attending the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) will have to wait at least another month before they receive their allowances directly from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This comes after the university announced it will be disbursing allowances to funded students in June 2023.
Earlier this year, NSFAS revealed that allowances will be paid directly to university students. Students were encouraged to register for their NSFAS mastercard with selected service providers and subsequently enjoy the direct payment solution.
CPUT says NSFAS is still implementing the direct payment of allowances to students, the university will be disbursing allowances to students in June 2023. The university received official confirmation from NSFAS that allowances will be paid directly to students from July 2023.
NSFAS is still implementing the Direct Payment of Allowances, and the current process communicated via email (18 May 2023, NSFAS Senior Management – University Support) will be deferred to July 2023.
NSFAS-funded students attending CPUT will receive their June allowances on the first day of the month. CPUT explained that the money will reflect in the student's bank account on 1 June 2023.
The university also revealed that they requested an exemption from NSFAS direct payment of allowances. The university is awaiting the outcome of their request.
CPUT was forced to shut down campuses and evacuate students after violent protests erupted. The protests are believed to be related to NSFAS funding eligibility criteria for students with 60-credit courses.
The indefinite suspension of the academic year forced the university to make changes to its 2023 academic calendar. These changes will impact most CPUT students except for those enrolled in courses in the Education Faculty.
