The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has officially launched its new national youth outreach initiative, Phanda Thursday, aimed at improving access to youth development services and economic opportunities across South Africa.
The programme was launched at the Sasol Club in eMbalenhle, Secunda, Mpumalanga, and is being led by NYDA Board Executive Chairperson, Dr Sunshine Myende.
What Is Phanda Thursday?
Phanda Thursday is a weekly national outreach programme designed to bring government support services, career opportunities and youth development programmes directly into communities.
The initiative aims to address ongoing challenges related to youth unemployment and limited access to support services by creating community-based platforms where young people can receive assistance.
Services Available Through The Programme
Through weekly activations at NYDA branches nationwide, young people will have access to a wide range of services and support opportunities.
These include:
- Career guidance and CV assistance
- Entrepreneurship and business development support
- Funding opportunities
- Skills development programmes
- Government application support services
The programme also aims to strengthen collaboration between government, businesses and community organisations working to improve youth development and economic inclusion.
Government Departments And Stakeholders Join Initiative
Phanda Thursday brings together multiple stakeholders on one integrated platform, including government departments, municipalities, State entities, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), development finance institutions and private sector partners.
The launch event also included exhibitions from several government departments and public entities, giving attendees direct access to important information, services and opportunities.

- The Department of Economic Development and Tourism

Improving Access To Youth Opportunities
The NYDA said the Phanda Thursday initiative is intended to make youth services more accessible while improving cooperation between organisations involved in youth development.
The programme forms part of broader efforts to tackle youth unemployment and ensure that young South Africans can access education, training, funding and employment opportunities within their communities.
