Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has confirmed when South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants will increase in 2025. Sassa grant increases were announced on Wednesday, 12 March 2025 during the 2025 Budget speech after weeks of delay.
Sassa distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Minister Godongwana confirmed that all grants except the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will be increased in 2025.
The Old Age and Disability Grants will each rise by R130, bringing them to R2,315 per month. The Child Support Grant will increase by R30 to R560, while the Foster Care Grant will see a R70 increase.
When Sassa Grants Will Increase
The Sassa grant increases will be implemented in April 2025. It is unclear if there will be another increase this year. However, some grants are usually increased by a small amount in October annually to account for inflation.
Sassa grant increases will impact approximately 28 million beneficiaries across the country, a figure that, according to Minister Godongwana, underscores the government's unwavering dedication to combating poverty and promoting equality.
The truth is that ours is one of the most comprehensive social safety nets among emerging economies. This reflects our commitment to addressing poverty and inequality while keeping our spending sustainable.

SRD Grant Extended Until 2026
Godongwana also announced that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, which was set to come to an end in March 2025, will be extended for another year.
The COVID19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD), in its current form, will be extended by a year to end March 2026. R35.2 billion is allocated for this purpose.
“The SRD will be used as a basis for the introduction of a sustainable form of income support for unemployed people,” said the Minister.
Almost 28 million people will be able to access social grants, according to the Finance Minister.
