The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes social grants to more than 18 million people every month. The amount of money received by beneficiaries of permanent grants increased in April and will remain in place during May.

Sassa distributes several permanent grants to beneficiaries. These permanent grants include the Older Persons grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Child support grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Care grant and the Child Support grant top-up.

In February 2023, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that R30 billion will be used for inflation-linked increases for permanent social grants. Grant beneficiaries began receiving these increased grant payments in April.

Here’s How Much May 2023 Sassa Grant Payments Will Be

  • Older Persons grant - R2,080
  • Older Persons 75 years and older - R2,100
  • Disability grant - R2,080
  • War Veterans grant - R2,100
  • Child Support grant - R500
  • Child Support grant (Top-up) - R500 + R250
  • Care Dependency grant - R2,080
  • Foster Care grant - R1,120
  • Grant-In-Aid - R500

Several of Sassa’s permanent grants will be increased again in October 2023. It's important to note that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is not a permanent grant and the amount received by beneficiaries, R350, has not been increased.

Sassa begins distributing grant payments to beneficiaries in the first week of every month. In May 2023 grant payments will commence on Wednesday, 3 May 2023 with the distribution of the older persons grants.

Grant Payment Dates For May 2023

  • Older Persons Grant - Wednesday, 3 May 2023

  • Disability Grant - Thursday, 4 May 2023

  • Children's Grants - Friday, 5 May 2023

Sassa grants are paid at the Post Office on these dates. Alternatively, grant beneficiaries can collect their money at several retail stores including Pick N Pay, Boxer, Usave, Shoprite and Checkers.

Beneficiaries may also choose to have their grants paid directly into their bank account. This is an attractive option for many beneficiaries as it allows them to access their money at any time.
