Chandler Jacobs confesses that, until he reached matric at St. Barnabas College, he was basically an average student and not particularly passionate about anything. “In my matric year everything changed. I took extra lessons to improve my marks and a friend told me about WeThinkCode_   (WTC). For the first time there was something that grabbed my attention and I decided to do the test,” he says.

But Chandler nearly missed the opportunity. “My friend reminded me about the deadline, so I skipped the lesson, ran home and did the online test.  I was beside myself when I got accepted for the bootcamp phase.”

The bootcamp was a huge challenge and, for the first time, he decided to see how far he could push himself. “It was on the bootcamp that I realised that I wanted to code and create things. It became my passion and my future. But I still had to be accepted for the course.”

Then the magical e-mail arrived to say that he was accepted as a WTC student. “I fell on the floor with joy and thanked God for this breakthrough in my life,” he recalls.

Chandler is now in his second year at WTC. “After working in coding for a while I really GOT IT when I worked with Python. Now I am progressing well, have a passion for breaking and fixing code and, as a technical mentor to the first years, teaching others how to code as well.”

There is not much for him outside of studying. “I am very focused. While my friends go out, I stay home. There’s no time for sport, but I love soccer and chess. My mom taught me to play chess and sometimes I play with my friends online.”

What’s next? “I’m not sure, perhaps something like Cyber Security.  I am hoping to be accepted for my internship at BSC, but I will only know in 2022.”

We’re holding thumbs for you, Chandler!
