Eduvos has officially launched its first-ever Law Clinic at its Midrand campus, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s mission to provide real-world, socially impactful legal education. The Eduvos Law Clinic embodies the university’s dual focus: equipping students with practical, future-fit legal skills while enhancing access to justice for underserved communities.
The Law Clinic provides free legal services to qualifying individuals through a means test that ensures indigent members of the public are prioritised. Services include matters relating to family law, labour law, consumer protection, and succession, which are high-need legal areas where many South Africans lack adequate support.
The clinic also offers Eduvos final-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Law, and Bachelor of Arts Streams in Law and Politics and Law and Economics (BCom) students hands-on legal experience under the close supervision of qualified legal professionals.
“This clinic is not just a teaching tool, it’s a statement,” said Dr. Tinaye Chivizhe, Head of the Eduvos Faculty of Law. It reflects our commitment to developing legal professionals who are not only work-ready but socially conscious, who understand both the power and responsibility of the law.”
Eduvos is now one of only two private institutions in South Africa with a law clinic registered under the South African University Law Clinics Association (SAULCA), reinforcing its status as a credible and innovative player in legal education.
A Future-Fit Approach to Legal Learning
The launch comes as part of Eduvos’ broader Future-Fit strategy: preparing students for the rapidly evolving legal landscape. In today’s world, lawyers must navigate not only courtrooms but also emerging technologies. Eduvos is integrating AI literacy, data law, and interdisciplinary knowledge into its law curriculum to ensure graduates are equipped for tomorrow’s challenges.
“The legal profession is not immune to disruption,” Dr. Chivizhe added. “Our students are taught how to use AI responsibly, understand data protection, and combine legal acumen with tech-savviness. The Law Clinic becomes a real-world environment to apply these lessons ethically.”
He cited recent high-profile cases where lawyers misused AI in legal research, resulting in scandal and unfortunate repercussions, underscoring the importance of proper training. “Our students won’t just know how to use these tools; they’ll understand when and why to use them, and where human judgement must take precedence.”
More Than a Clinic: A Movement for Change
Eduvos views the clinic not only as an educational initiative but as a civic platform. The students, many engaging with real clients for the first time, gain more than legal practice, they experience the human side of justice. They are mentored to understand the lived realities of the people they represent, cultivating empathy alongside advocacy skills.
Already engaging local communities such as Alexandra and Ivory Park, the clinic is becoming a beacon for individuals who previously had no access to legal recourse.
An Invitation to Contribute
Eduvos is calling on established law firms, non-profit organisations, and social justice advocates to partner in amplifying the clinic’s impact. From mentorship and technical assistance to supporting public interest litigation, these collaborations can make a meaningful difference.
“This initiative is a bold challenge to the misconception that private institutions don’t serve the public good,” said Dr. Chivizhe. “There’s no profit motive, just a clear purpose: to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves, while preparing students to become the lawyers our future demands.”
An official launch event is being planned for early 2026, where Eduvos aims to bring together media, law faculty from across the country, human rights organisations, and potential partners to witness the clinic’s work and explore collaboration opportunities.
