The term "gap year" refers to a period of experiential learning that is undertaken after high school, and before starting a career or furthering one's education to enhance one's practical, professional, and personal understanding.

There are many reasons to take a gap year, depending on one's situation and desires for career progress, but the following are the most frequent:

  • To broaden your view of the world
  • To gain relevant work experience and key skills
  • To earn some money
  • To develop useful contacts
  • Make international friends
  • Improve employability with key skills
  • Challenge yourself
  • Take time out between school and further studies/work
  • Improve and gain new life skills
  • Do something worthwhile

With this in mind here are some gap year programmes to consider if you are gonna be taking a gap year in South Africa.

Warriors Academy Gap Year Program in South Africa

Since it began operating in South Africa 17 years ago, Warriors Academy has received international accreditation as a gap year programme. There are four seasonal Quests that make up the Warriors Gap Year programme. Each quest is organised and includes special elements and tasks.

These are aimed at providing young adults with tools for emotional intelligence, time management, stress and conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving while they discover and take advantage of all that South Africa has to offer.

Plan My Gap Year

In addition to providing 1-week to 6-month volunteering opportunities on a top-notch game reserve near Kenton-On-Sea, South Africa, PMGY also does so in the seaside city of Cape Town.

In Cape Town, volunteers participate in a variety of project work, such as English teaching, caring for orphanages, and working with children who have special needs.

On the "Big 5" game reserve, volunteers take part actively and receive a thorough education in conservation management.

The VACorps Gap Year Program

The VACorps Gap Year Program is aimed at helping you get ready for life after high school.

As a member of the programme, you'll become a part of a neighbourhood that fosters a sense of family, as you settle in and make Cape Town your home once you arrive in South Africa.

It will also lead you through a thorough orientation beginning on your first day to help you make the most of every opportunity in South Africa.

Gap Year with African Impact

After graduating from high school, university, or your job, taking a year off can be a terrific opportunity for skill development, personal development, and experience. African Impact is aimed at encouraging individuals to enjoy life to the fullest.

As a result, they offer several programmes available throughout Southern Africa that will let you invest in your future while also having fun and being a part of a kind community.

If a gap year is in your sights, you must make sure that your decision to take it is thoroughly considered because there may be some drawbacks that are unavoidable, such as: putting off your graduation by a year, spending a lot of money planning it, and possibly getting sick during that period.
