What is “Conversational leadership” and how does it help leaders succeed?
Below is insight from a recent study by Andy Loignon, Diane Bergeron, and Karissa McKenna
Summary by Albert Maass, Industrial Psychologist and Principal Coach at Pro Talent Academy for Leadership Development
Perspective
There is no doubt that leadership competence determines success or failure of organisations, teams and individuals in leadership roles. It is considered one of the most studied phenomena in human life and organizational behaviour. The “License to Lead” development programme simplifies scientific insights about leadership in practical strategies for you to apply in real life.
Follow the programme, do the activities, engage key decision makers as coaches and position yourself for promotion and career advancement.
Some definitions about leadership
Leadership is a social process. That is, leadership is neither a matter of one’s inherent traits nor something that’s bestowed based on one’s job title. Instead, it emerges through social interactions where individuals identify their agreed-upon direction, negotiate proper alignment, and reinvigorate one another’s commitment to a collective goal.
The leader’s effectiveness in conversations, is to some extent determined by
• How much time individuals speak during the conversation
• What proportion of their statements are questions
• The extent to which they engage in boundary spanning conversations with participants in other divisions
The outdated approach to assess leadership effectiveness
“Great Man” theories of leadership have permeated research studies for decades. These studies, which inform leadership development programs, emphasize relatively fixed and innate characteristics that differentiate effective leaders from ineffective ones. Leadership can sometimes be equated with titles or hierarchical roles. That is, influence can be presumed to be largely the purview of a manager or someone with formal authority.
Leadership is about conversations
Leadership is better defined as a social process that results in shared direction, alignment and commitment. From this perspective, leaders help cultivate agreement within a group on its overall goals (i.e., direction), coordinate work within the group (i.e., alignment), and generate mutual responsibility in the group (i.e., commitment). Thus, leadership does not reside solely in an individual but emerges from the interactions among people working together towards collective outcomes. Within this viewpoint, leadership is shared with others, fluid, and constructed during interactions. Developing one’s leadership effectiveness, therefore, requires a relational perspective that explicitly targets what unfolds within collectives (e.g., teams, workgroups, networks, and organizations) rather than solely within the leader as an individual. At the core of any social process are conversations. Conversations support the exchange of information, the voicing of concerns, the sharing of new ideas, and the expression of emotions.

Action steps
Leaders of work teams directly influence the culture and performance in the workplace. It is important that they understand their leadership role and include essential leadership dimensions in their continuous professional development (CPD).
Just like the human body needs a regular portion of essential nutrients to stay healthy, every leader needs a regular reminder and refresher exercise in essential leadership dimensions. The LICENSE TO LEAD development program is such a solution with practical applications in the real workplace which positions the learner for success and career progress, and it offers international certificates in leadership and CPD points verified by some professional bodies.
