Stellenbosch Municipality is recruiting 12 Learner Fire Fighters for a 12-month training programme aimed at equipping participants with practical experience in firefighting, emergency rescue services and community protection.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are passionate about public safety and emergency services and who meet the municipality's residency and qualification requirements.

Stellenbosch Municipality Learner Fire Fighter Vacancies

  • Position: Learner Fire Fighter
  • Number of Posts: 12
  • Programme Duration: 12 Months
  • Employer: Stellenbosch Municipality

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Proof of completion of a Fire Fighter 1 (FF1) course
  • Be medically, physically and mentally fit
  • Have no criminal record
  • Reside within the Stellenbosch Municipal area and remain a resident throughout the duration of the programme
  • Submit proof of address and an affidavit confirming residency

Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide proof of their criminal record status from the Local Criminal Record Centre.

Additional Requirements

Candidates should possess:

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Good communication skills in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape: English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa
  • Good overall health

Applicants must also have no mental phobias related to:

  • Confined spaces (claustrophobia)
  • Heights (acrophobia)
  • Depths (bathophobia)
  • Water (aquaphobia)
  • Blood (hemophobia)
  • Darkness (achluophobia)
  • Isolation (autophobia)
  • Corpses (necrophobia)

Learner Fire Fighter Duties And Responsibilities

Successful candidates will perform various duties under supervision, including:

  • Responding to firefighting emergencies
  • Participating in emergency rescue operations
  • Rendering basic medical care
  • Assisting with fire prevention activities
  • Participating in training programmes
  • Operating and maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus
  • Maintaining fire station facilities
  • Carrying out related duties in accordance with the Fire Brigade Services Act (Act 99 of 1987)

The role focuses on protecting the lives and property of residents within the municipality.

Added Advantage

Candidates who hold a valid Code B driver's licence will have an added advantage during the selection process.

Physical Fitness Requirements

Due to the demanding nature of firefighting duties, applicants must be physically fit and free from cardiac or respiratory conditions that could affect their ability to perform the job.

All applicants will be required to undergo physical fitness assessments as part of the recruitment process.
