Cover letters should be fresh, relevant and more importantly it should open the door to the interview room. If you think your cover letter needs some improving, here are some tips on what to include and avoid when constructing your letter.

Cover letters may just be the most important part of your job application and your potential employer will see this before the even see or CV or meet you for an interview. This is why it is important to capture the attention of your recruiter, making meeting you worth their time. Here is how to make your cover letter stand out from the crowd.

How to write a cover letter for a job application

The purpose of a cover letter is to get an employer to read your resume and ultimately seal that job interview.

By including a cover letter in your job application, you will show that you have taken the time to read the advert and reflect on why you are the best match for the job.

A good cover letter enhances your CV and job application, so avoid rewriting or summarising the information already presented in your CV.

Start your letter by re-examining the job advert and searching for the two or three key elements that the employer is looking for in a potential employee. Provide instances when you have displayed these attributes or skills. For example, if the position calls for strong conflict management skills describe a situation where you handled disagreements in a positive way.

Make sure that your letter is addressed to the correct person and that the language is professional and respectful.

The average length of a cover letter is two to four paragraphs and should not exceed an A4 page. The letter should be concise and direct, covering who you are and what you want in a few short lines.

The number one rule when writing a cover letter is to relate personal information to the potential job. Whether you discuss your skills, experience, personality or training the aim is to communicate why you are a good fit for the position.

Conduct a thorough spell check before submitting your document and ensure that your writing can be clearly understood.

It is a good idea to highlight the position that you are applying for or to include a reference number or job title as a reminder for the reader.

Steer clear of generic cover letters as potential employers may interpret your use of a general document as indifference toward a particular job. “If it’s not special, don’t send it”.
