There are, of course, various professional levels that make it such a flexible career, but for those who are looking for entry positions, this field could prove quite lucrative.

Some useful traits for an entry level sales and retail position include:
- Communication Skills: You would need to be able to not only communicate what you are selling to your customer, but also be able to do so in a way that will interest the customer. This means being able to tailor your communication responses to different types of consumers.
- Approachability: You would need to be able to give your customer’s the impression that they can ask you questions about what it is that you are selling, either through open body language, or creating a polite rapport with your customer.
- Flexibility: You would need to be able to adapt in any sales situation. You would be dealing with a variety of different customers, some of whom might be difficult, and you would need to be able to adjust your sales approach accordingly, but also know when to stop with a client.
- Negotiation: Much like flexibility, you should be able to effectively close a deal without pushing customers over the edge, but whilst also making sure to not settle for less than is required.
