Although police work comes with it own dangers and stresses, it is a very essential service in our society. Are you looking to pursue a career as a police officer? If so, there are certain requirements you need to be aware of.

As a police officer, your job would be to attend to emergency service requests, detain suspects, and conduct accident and crime scene investigations. Other responsibilities would include preventing crime and upholding law and order in society. 

Within this career path there is room for career growth as are many various positions that may be filled. There is a distinct hierarchy structure that can facilitate professional advancement from police officer to chief inspector. 

Unfortunately, you cannot become a SAPS officer without a driver's license. 

Here are the requirements to become a police officer: 

  • You must have a valid driver's license 
  • You must be a South African citizen 
  • You must be fluent in English and at least one other official language in South Africa 
  • You must not have a criminal record 
  • You must be at least 18 years old but under the age of 30 years old

Additionally, you will be required to submit a health questionnaire that is verified by a licensed physician and also have the required physical, mental, and medical fitness for the job.

Working for the police is a rewarding career with the potential to change the community, even though it can be challenging at times.
