The W&R Seta is the Sector Education and Training Authority for the wholesale and retail sector. The organisation is responsible for planning the skills needs for all wholesale and retail companies.
The W&R Seta bursary programme is aimed at assisting young people who want to study at public institutions such as universities, unversities of technology or TVET Colleges. The bursary scheme provides financial assistance to deserving students who demonstrate dedication, passion and a commitment to academic excellence.
The W&RSETA established a Bursary Scheme in 2011 which is administered by the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and Career Wise. The Scheme is aimed at providing financial assistance to needy students to study wholesale and retail qualifications.
The bursary scheme is open to learners who want to study any of the retail related qualifications at a recognised university, universities of technology and TVET College (formerly known as FET College) in South Africa.
The W&RSETA is cognisant of the fact that TVET colleges are strategically positioned to address skills shortages in the country and realises the importance of tapping into this skills pool in these institutions.
The bursary scheme will assist the Sector by providing a pool of potential employees with scarce and critical skills, thus narrowing the gap between supply and demand. It will further promote and position wholesale and retail as a career of choice.
Students can only be funded by the W&RSeta and shall not accept any other bursary, grant, loan or other form of financial assistance from another institution without a written approval of the W&RSeta. The scheme does not cover repeat modules.
Students whose applications are successful are offered full bursaries to fund the total cost of their study-related expenses as follows:
- Tuition
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Study materials (Books and laptops)
Students are not required to repay the W&RSeta. However they are encouraged to work in retail as the bursary scheme is means to address scarce skills in the sector.
Undergrad bursaries are for both employed and unemployed students, while postgrad bursaries are earmarked for Wholesale and Retail sector employed students.
Unemployed students must be studying full time courses to be eligible for the funding.
The W&RSeta also offers bursaries for postgraduate studies at MBA/Masters/PhD.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Students who have been accepted or registered at an institution of learning (University, University of Technology, or public and private TVET College) can apply at the institution they intend to, or are studying at. The W&RSeta does not accept any applications from students.
Students must be unemployed and be studying full time on qualifications related to the Wholesale and Retail Sector such as IT, marketing, accounting, supply chain, etc.
