Sector Education and Training Authority for the services sector is the vocational skills training organization in South Africa. The Services Seta is responsible for creating and managing internships, learnerships, unit based skills programmes and apprenticeships within South Africa. In this article we will tell you everything you need to know about Services Seta bursaries.

The Services Seta bursary is offered to both unemployed and employed individuals that are in studying towards a qualification in the service sector. The bursary is administered and regulated through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Services Seta and the institution of further or higher education learning. 

The fields of study that SETA funds are as follows:

  • Human Resources 
  • Marketing 
  • Entrepreneurship and or SMME development 
  • Media & Communications 
  • Project Management 
  • Waste Management Cleaning 
  • Dermatology & related 
  • Cosmetic developments 
  • Real Estate & Property Development 
  • Business Management /Administration 
  • Economics 
  • Social Sciences

The SETA bursary will cover study related expenses, which include:

  • Tuition Fees
  • Prescribed Academic books
  • Accommodation(Campus residence & Accredited off campus residence)
  • Meals allowance (meal allowance is capped at a maximum amount of R12 000 which equates to R1200 per month for 10 academic months)
  • Research & Travel Allowance

Services Seta has a capped amount that they are willing to pay for a bursar to study towards his or her qualification.

The maximum amount that SETA services are willing to pay are:

  • Undergraduate & BTech (employed) R35 000  (unemployed) R65 000
  • Honours  (employed) R45 000  (unemployed) R70 000
  • Masters  (employed) R55 000  (unemployed) R90 000
  • PhD (employed) R65 000  (unemployed) R120 000 
  • TVET Colleges  (employed) R17 500 (unemployed) R35 000

To qualify for a SETA bursary you will need to meet the following requirements:

UNEMPLOYED

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Between 18 and 35 years old
  • Currently unemployed
  • Intend on studying towards a NQF level 5 qualification (or above) within one of the fields of study that are funded
  • Studying full time at a public tertiary institute (University/ University of Technology/ TVET College) in South Africa
  • Achieve a minimum overall average of 50%
  • Total household income of less than R600 000 per annum

EMPLOYED

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Currently unemployed
  • Intend on studying towards a NQF level 5 qualification (or above) within one of the fields of study that are funded
  • Studying full time at a public tertiary institute (University/ University of Technology/TVET College) in South Africa
  • Achieve a minimum overall average of 50%
  • Total household income of less than R600 000 per annum

To progress with the SETA bursary, individuals need to pass all modules and continue studying in the same stream. Bursary termination will occur if the individual breaches any terms and conditions of the bursary.
