Apprenticeships are a solid way for individuals looking to enter the job market as certified Artisans, to prepare themselves for what the working world may look like. Being an apprentice offers you the chance to earn an income whilst you attempt to get certified, combining practical on-the-job training, with studying. Companies like Eskom provide apprenticeship opportunities.

The theory and practical work that you would need for your certification, is combined with valuable training, offering a holistic learning experience ensuring that you are workplace-ready.

Apprenticeship Requirements

In order to be able to apply for an apprenticeship, applicants must be 16 years of age or older, possessing a minimum of a grade 10 pass, though a grade 11 or matric pass are greatly preferred.

Apprentices would be studying towards a skilled trade, opening them up to a variety of occupational options. These options include careers as electricians, carpenters, plumbers, cooks, and mechanics in the construction, manufacturing, transportation and service sectors.

The apprenticeship typically functions as follows:

  • Apprentices will spend the majority of their time learning on the job from a mentor, whilst the other 20% of their time will be dedicated more directly to their studies.
  • Apprentices are typically required to complete 40 hours of work per week, as well as complete training levels, until they have accumulated enough hours as is required of the typically 2-4 year long apprenticeship.
  • At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices will write a multiple-choice exam, and those who pass will become fully certified.

Although competition is quite strong when it comes to apprenticeships, it is important to note that companies are often looking to take on apprentices, so keep your eyes peeled for application openings.
