The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) requires students to complete a trade test in order to be classified as qualified plumbers. Following the completion of all curriculum components necessary for a plumbing qualification, a trade test will need to be done.

A trade test is defined as the final summative assessment for students who are completing an artisan qualification for a listed trade. Trade tests may be completed at any accredited Trade Test Centre by an assessor who is registered with the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB).

After completing their studies at a registered Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college or private service provider, students will be required to register to do their trade test.

Students may expect to be tested on the skills, competencies and knowledge they have acquired while learning their course. The test will include theoretical and practical components to show their skills and knowledge.

Those who pass the trade test will receive a certification which acknowledges them as a qualified plumber. Students who do not pass the trade test may redo the test two more times if they need to.

Individuals who do not pass the test after three attempts will be referred for recognition of prior learning. Then as soon as they are ready to redo the test, they may reapply.
