The Department of Basic Education are now discussing a possible second phase for the school assistants programme which fell under the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative. More than 300 000 young people were hired to assist in schools.


Teachers Assistants in the Free State have had their prayers answered now that their contracts have been extended. As part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme, 300 000 youth across South Africa were hired to be school assistants.

Following multiple reports of the Department missing out on payments to General and Education Assistants, the Department of Basic Education has now responded. The hiring of school assistants forms part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative.


More than 300 000 youth in South Africa have been employed as education and general assistants, more than 19 000 will be welcomed to address academic disruptions caused by Covid-19 in the Free State.
