With the economic hardship that Covid-19 influenced over what was an already suffering South African economy, early on during the pandemic, government assigned a R350 SRD grant to aid those who were hit hardest by this economic downfall.
As stipulated on the Sassa SRD grant application form, the following are the requirements that need to be met in order to have a successful application outcome. The applicant must:
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee registered on the Home Affairs system; and be a resident within South African borders
- Be above the age of 18
- Be unemployed
- Not be receiving any other form of income
- Not be receiving any other social grant
- Not be receiving an unemployment insurance benefit/ does not qualify for this benefit
- Not be receiving a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) stipend
- Not be receiving any other government Covid-19 response
- Not be resident in a government funded or subsidized institution
If any of these requirements are not met, your application may be denied. However, what the application does not explicitly mention are the parameters for being denied on the basis of “age out of range”.
The “age out of range” status implies that the applicant is not between the ages of 18 and 60 years of age.
In the case that you receive this message in your application and are below the age of 18, there are other potential options. In such cases, an adult parent/guardian will have to apply for a Child Support Grant worth R1 050 per month on behalf of the person who is below the age of 18.
For applicants aged 60 years and upwards, the only option would be to apply for an Old Persons Grant worth R1 890 per month for the elderly aged 60-75, and R1 910 per month for those older than 75 years of age.
