Students who receive NSFAS allowances, for TVET College or university, will now be receiving the first of their 10 annual payments.
NSFAS confirmed that the first of the year's payments would be distributed from the 1st of February. As this was a Sunday it is likely that the payments may take a few days to reflect in student's bank accounts.
NSFAS ALLOWANCES
This first payment of the year is an upfront payment to cover the full book allowance, and then one month of meal, accommodation, personal care, and travel allowances. Universities will continue to make these payments to their students who are approved for NSFAS funding. TVET Colleges students also receive their allowances directly into their bank accounts and NSFAS has called on them to ensure they submit the correct bank details via their MyNsfas account.
Students who are eligible for funding can confirm their registration at a university or TVET College on their MyNsfas account.
Universities and colleges should have confirmed with NSFAS which students have registered at their institution. Most Colleges have completed registration and universities are running their registration weeks now.
It is important that students entering higher education for the first time only register with one institution. Where the student has had more than one offer of a course, they must choose one and register for that. There are multiple reports of students who have registered with more than one college or university and have then had their NSFAS funding cancelled.
NSFAS APPEALS
Students who were refused further funding because of the N+ rule can no longer appeal this decision. That appeal window was closed on the 31st January. Applicants who were denied funding had 30 days from the date that they were informed to make an appeal.
