The Center For Teaching and Learning at the University of the Free State (UFS) has conducted studies on students in South Africa's public universities in order to understand and develop improved environments at universities for new entrants.

The Chief Executive Officer of Universities South Africa Dr Phethiwe Matutu worked alongside UFS Professor Francois Strydom on these studies.

Professor Strydom says that the studies focus on what students need to do in order to succeed as well as what universities need to do to support students in achieving that success.

"Through this work South African public higher education institutions are part of a global community that strives to help [first year] students transition and be successful." said Professor Strydom.

He says that the First Year Experience programmes at universities helps new students understand how university works and enlightens them on the skills they may need to succeed as well as where to find support.

Universities also provide academic advice which involves students receiving help with subjects and success coaching in order for them to adapt their study skills for the university environment and understand what they will need for their studies.

Strydom says that universities also offer tutorials which create an environment where students can learn from each other. Sometimes these tutorials are compulsory as they deal with more difficult subjects.

At some universities like UFS students who speak English as a second or third language are assisted in their home language during their tutorials and are encouraged to engage in the Academic Literacy programmes at the university to develop their English language skills.

He says that research shows that South African students often overestimate how prepared they are for university and underestimate how challenging university is going to be.

Students have been encouraged to ask for help when they feel that university is becoming very challenging as universities offer support services through lecturers, tutors, student advisors and other support staff members.

Dr Phethiwe Matutu has urged students to take their studies very seriously and practice self discipline in order to stay on top of things.
