The basic education department has urged grade 12 candidates who missed their exams due to various reasons, and to prepare to write those subjects on 8 December 2022.

The Education Department has shared that this year’s matric examinations were marred with protest action, particularly in Mpumalanga where some exam question papers could not be delivered to the schools.

While in Gauteng, learners were barred from going to school due to protest action; this resulted in 50 matric learners not being able to sit for their examinations.

In an interview, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga has announced:

The department can confirm that the date has been set aside for the rewrite of different subjects in provinces where there were valid reasons for learners not being able to write.

According to Basic Education, the other provinces that will need to prepare for the matric rewrite include the Eastern Cape, Western and Cape and the North West provinces.

Amongst the many issues that disrupted this years’ cohort of matric learners, include loadshedding that took place while candidates were busy with their Computer Applications technology final examination.

DBE has urged all of the candidates in the five affected provinces to prepare for the matric rewrite. Parents and caregivers have been advised to support their children and make sure that the learners prepare adequately for this particular exam.

Basic Education has confirmed that the learners will not be utilising the previous exam paper. Mhlanga said the department has given the matric candidates this opportunity so that they are able to sit for their exam under better conditions and so that they too receive their 2022 matric results when they are released on 20 January 2023.
