Gauteng 2023 School Admissions Open This Week

The Gauteng online public-school admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2023 academic year is set to open in just a few days. Parents and guardians are advised to gather all important documents that are needed to complete the online application process.

Applications will officially commence on 22 July 2022 and will close on 19 August 2022. 

Parents and guardians that are hoping to secure placement for their children are encouraged to start the online application process as soon as applications are open to avoid disappointment because spaces in schools fill up quickly.

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi has announced that the department has reviewed the way the previous system operated and has enhanced it so that it is more user-friendly.

Admission Advice from the GDE:

To combat any challenges during the application process, GDE has advised parents on the the following.

  1. Parents can use any smartphone or computer device to log on www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to submit an application.
  2. It is important that parents create a username and password that is easy to remember. 
  3. Should parents be unable to do the online application process they can visit one of 47 decentralised walk-in centres or public schools for assistance.
  4. Apply to schools with a feeder zone that covers your home address (A feeder zone means an area from which a school accepts its core intake).
  5. Provide at least one reliable cell number when registering parental details.
  6. Submit all the necessary documents on time.

Five Step Application Process: 

  1. Register Parent or Guardian details, once completed parents will receive a SMS with your Username and Password 
  2. Register Address details 
  3. Register the learners details
  4. Apply to a school
  5. Upload/ submit certified copies of all the required documents within 7 days

Important Documents to submit:

NB: All documents need to be certified before being submitted. 

  1. Parent and Child ID, Birth certificate or Passport
  2. Refugee Permit/ Asylum Seeker Permit/ Permanent Residence Permit/ Study Permit
  3. Proof of Home Address
  4. Proof of Work Address
  5. Clinic/Vaccination/Immunisation card (Grade 1 only)

Parents have until 26 August 2022 to submit the required documents, however GDE announced that any documents that are uploaded or submitted after the application period closing date will be considered as incomplete applications and will only receive placement at available schools between 1-15 December 2022. 

Learner placements will commence on 3 October 2022 and close on 30 November 2022. Parents will be notified if their child was offered placement to one of the schools they applied to and further instructions will be communicated by the school.
