In a statement released on Tuesday, WSU said students protested on Monday evening without any prior warning. During the unrest, protestors forcibly entered a staff member's on-campus residence.
In this violent incident, the staff member’s wife sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care in hospital.
Two students sustained minor injuries during the incident and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The university added, “Tragically, a third person lost their life during the home invasion. This individual is not a registered student nor a staff member of the University.”

Minister of Higher Education To Visit WSU Campus
Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane will visit the WSU campus in the coming days for stakeholders engagements and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to protect the university community.
The Minister strongly condemned all forms of violence and intimidation on university campuses and reiterates that students, staff, and all members of the academic community must be protected.
Nkabane said “Institutions of higher learning must remain safe spaces that nurture learning, dialogue, and development.”
The Minister conveyed their condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured individuals a full recovery.

Parliament Calls For Student Security
The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training called on the university to prioritise the safety and security of both students and staff. They also want the institution to ensure that all campus spaces, including residences, remain gun-free zones conducive to learning and personal development.
Committee Chairperson Tebogo Letsie further called for a full investigation into the tragic incident and to determine why a residence manager was allowed to possess a firearm on the premises.
There must be consequence management for those who failed to uphold safety standards and allowed this tragedy to occur.
