The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Administrator, Freeman Nomvalo, says NSFAS appeal and NSFAS loan application decisions will be released soon.
Nomvalo, who was appointed as administrator by former Minister Blade Nzimande in April 2024 following the dissolution of the NSFAS board addressed a media briefing on developments relating to administrative reform at NSFAS.
NSFAS Appeal Decisions
The administrator said resolving issues related to unresolved NSFAS appeal applications is crucial for ensuring that deserving students receive the necessary funding.
At the beginning of the administration period, there were 88,000 unresolved NSFAS appeals. As of July 2024, this number has been significantly reduced to 27,000.
According to the administrator, NSFAS currently has around 4,000 appeals still pending resolution. However, the number of unresolved appeals fluctuates as new appeals are submitted.
Nomvalo said all NSFAS appeal decisions are expected to be communicated to students before the end of August 2024.
NSFAS Loan Decisions
Regarding NSFAS loan decisions, Nomvalo said many applicants did not meet the funding requirements, and some students did not formally apply for the loan.
Unsuccessful NSFAS bursary applicants were encouraged to apply for NSFAS loans.
However, Nomvalo said while many students created profiles on the myNSFAS system, they did not complete the loan application process. Simply creating a profile does not constitute a submitted application.
Loan application decisions have been made, and the outcomes will be communicated to students shortly.
The administrator said the scheme is committed to informing students about their funding decisions promptly, ensuring that all necessary information is conveyed in due course.
