The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Trimester 1 applications are now open.
The government bursary scheme has invited students planning to enrol or currently enrolled in approved courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to apply for funding.
NSFAS offers comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
Students planning to register for Trimester 1 courses at TVET colleges can now apply for NSFAS funding. Those intending to begin their studies in the 2025 academic year must submit their applications during the current NSFAS application period.
NSFAS 2025 Application Deadlines
NSFAS bursary applications for 2025 are open, and thousands of students have already applied. Students must submit their applications online by 15 December 2024.
NSFAS has confirmed that TVET walk-in applications won't be available in 2025. Grade 12 learners are reminded that matric results are not required when applying for NSFAS funding.
Who Qualifies for NSFAS?
NSFAS funding is available to all South African citizens and permanent residents who meet the following criteria:
- A combined household income of no more than R350,000 per annum before deductions.
- Individuals living with disabilities may qualify if their household income is up to R600,000 per annum.
- Students with a combined household income between R350,000 and R600,000 may qualify for an NSFAS loan.

- Create a myNSFAS account: Visit the NSFAS website and set up your account.
- Complete the application form: Provide all required information, including personal details, academic history, and financial information.
- Upload supporting documents: Submit the necessary documents to support your application.
- Submit your application: Ensure your application is complete and submitted before the deadline.
NSFAS TVET College application periods align with the academic calendar, allowing students to apply for funding based on their intended registration cycle. It is important to apply for the funding cycle that matches the academic term in which you plan to enrol.
Key NSFAS application periods for 2025 are as follows:
- Trimester 2: Opens 12 May 2025 and closes 23 May 2025.
- Semester 2: Opens 14 July 2025 and closes 31 July 2025.
- Trimester 3: Opens 8 September 2025 and closes 19 September 2025.
NSFAS has emphasised that the application process is free of charge, and no fees are required at any stage of the process.
